Limb reconstruction is slowly evolving away from external fixation. Pins and/or wires traversing the soft tissues are extremely uncomfortable in the thigh. External fixators surrounding the thigh make sitting and sleeping difficult. Minimally invasive techniques using plates or nails are now available that use the external fixator as an intra-operative tool rather than definitive management. Blocking screws and rigid reamers can be used in lieu of the external fixator using the reverse planning method. While these techniques are regularly utilized by limb reconstruction surgeons, they may be unfamiliar to the general pediatric orthopaedic surgeon. The goal of this webinar, co-sponsored by the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society (LLRS), is to explain and demonstrate these techniques to allow a wider audience of surgeons to feel comfortable using them.
